The “Coastal Ark” from Georgia’s Coastal Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources will be on hand and open for exploration. Oatland’s Marine Monitoring Lab and Ledbetter Pond Learning Station will have activities that teach about fresh and salt water wetlands and their inhabitants. Visitors can get free installation of turtle excluder devices on their crab traps so that they can help protect the Diamondback Terrapin-our only native brackish water turtle, while fishing for blue crabs this season. There will also be lessons on throwing a cast net and fishing for blue crab among other activities. Georgia’s coastal marshes are important, beneficial ecosystems that contribute a great deal to our economy. As this region grows in popularity as a place to live, play and visit, a balance must be struck between human uses and the protection of the environment. Knowing your connection and how your choices impact these environments can help protect it for future generations. For more information about the schedule of activities please call 912-395-1500. Oatland Island Wildlife Center is a unit of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and is located five miles east of Savannah off Islands Expressway. It serves primarily as a field trip site for school children throughout the region to learn about natural and environmental science. The Center encompasses a total of 175 acres of salt marsh, freshwater wetlands, and maritime forest habitats, and has a two-mile long “Native Animal Nature Trail” where live indigenous animals may be viewed.
